Construction Process

Construction Process - Film Magazine Cover

Shown above is the start of my magazine cover, I have placed sell lines were I want to, but they have not effects on them also the font and the size is wrong, so I will change that in time, this layout has helped me think about the placement of the maon picture on the front cover more carefully, so after my photoshoot when I have produced the right picture for my front cover I will place it correctly within were the sell lines are placed, I have also tried to make my front cover look more effective already, I have tried to achieve this by including the issue number, the date the issue was released and a barcode, all these factors together help make the cover look more professional and more catching to the audience.

Construction Process- Film Poster

I'm happy with my first draft for my poster, I have tried hard to produce the correct layout. I have achieved this by placing the film name, slogan and characters name in positions which fit in well with the rest of the poster, the start of the creation of my poster makes it easier to include a picture because I now know the preferd position of the picture around the writing. I have included institutional names in my work so people can idnetify the creators, this may persuade them to see the film if they have seen a film by the same company before which they enjoyed.

Photo shoot Images

Below are some images from my photoshoot which I intend to use in my production, one for my trailer and one for my magazine cover. I have used different shot types to help my target audience to decide on the best picture in their opinion from the shoot for my trailer and for my magazine cover. For everyone of my rough drafts I have used a plain brick-like background, like I intended based on my photo shoot plans, the plain background makes the audience concentrate more on the main character, and what he is doing, so codes and conventions are shown to the audience much more effectively. In every photo, the main character is seen with a baseball bat, plimsoles, jeans and wearing a hoodie, just like I intended based on my prop and costume planning post. The use of mise-en-scene through the use of props and costume help show the genre and help the audience presume roughly what the film is about, persuade them to go and
see it.

Photo shoot Picture - 1.
My first draft is a medium close-up, I firstly decided to produce this shot because it is a good
shot to show facial expressions, we see the character looking cocky with his head slightly tilted back implying that he believes he has more power than other people. The picture on the left is without make-up whilst the one on the right is the same picture but with make-up.

Photo shoot Picture-2
This is the best shot out of the five to show the costume of the character due to it is a wide shot, so shows the whole costume. This shot will be good for a magazine cover because there is a lot of space either side of the character which could be used for sell lines to help advertise the magazine.

Photo shoot Picture-3
Another wide shot, this one is different because it is an action shot, the character is actually doing something, rather than standing and posing, this is useful because it produces a more striking, dramatic shot, that will catch the audiences eye more effectively whether it was on a magazine cover of a film poster.

Photo shoot Picture-4

Another wide shot that could be used for a magazine front cover, the facial expressions on the character in this shot are very good, they help show that he is very rude and doesn't stand for any rubbish, this shot is the best at showing the rough urban location which i am showing to show in my production as well.

Audience Feedback - I asked 30 people in my target audience to pick their favourite out of the four pictures from my photo shoot. The fourth picture was the most popular with 12 out of the 30 votes whilst the third picture was in song with 8 votes, this has shown me that the audience like to see wide shots better than mainly any others, this has helped me because it has shown me that I will include at least one picture in my production with a wide shot.

Shooting Schedule

This is a scanned in shooting schedule that I used for the stills camera on the days of shooting. It shows the day I recorded on, how long the different shots were which is produced, the type of shot, the location of which which my recording took place, the equipment used, the cast's names, the props used in the different shots and whether I am satisfied with the shot its self, whether I I will use it in my production or not use. Creating a shooting schedule has helped me make sure i have produced the right shots for my production based on my storyboard, I not really sure about editing decisions as of yet, so I made some notes about what I think would work with each shot, I think it would be very hard to say which shots will be used without watching the footage properly yet.

Comparing trailers

Shown below is my first attempt at creating a trailer for my film 'Deuces.' I have included any sound change, so it isn't realistic from a sound perspective. I have tried to include a lot of fades between shots so it disguises the editing and gives the trailer a good continuous flow. I'm happy with some of the shots which I created such as the over-the-shoulder shots and the mid-shots. The genre of youth crime was successfully shown to the audience I believe via the use of mise-en-scene because of the costume used such as hoodies and skinny jeans, which stereotypically link to youth's in todays age. The locations were done very effectively as well, dark, damp, run down locations like i said in my reece helped show the rough personalities the characters involved in the film have.

Comparing Harry Brown trailer - Below is a trailer which I would like to replicate, Harry Brown is a similar genre of film to mine. I think if I learn a couple of things from the Harry Brown trailer film then it will help me in making mine more professional. Firstly the trailer shows a lot of different scenes in the film, such as a fight, gun shots, a fire and police involvements. These help express the genre and make the audience more involved in the film. In my second draft for my trailer I will try to include more action packed shots, this will help show-off the film better and gain the audiences attention. The Harry Brown trailer also includes a lot of diegetic and non-diegetic sound, I need to copy how the non-diegetic sound builds up in the trailer to show the tension involved in the film.

Sunday 10 October 2010

Photo shoot days.

The pictures below are evidence of me doing make-up for the main character, I used a bold, black pencil under his eye to create a 'black eye' for some shots which I wanted to create, showing that he had been in a fight.

The pictures shown below are evidence of me producing footage to create my trailer, some photos below show me actually recording whilst others show some footage which I collected during the process of producing the shots I wanted to create for my film.

Costume Planning, Prop Planning

Costume - Based on my secondary research, I have looked at my target audience's clothes and tryed to replicate it in picking my costume for my characters. I believe I have succesfully done this, skinny jeans, plimsoles and hoodies seem to be the main type of clothes that Scene kids wear, who are my target audience. So below are my plans for costume in my production.

These clothes and shoes shown are what I feel Brick (The
main character.) Also his mates (Elliot and Nathan) should wear, They are very casual and show that the characters don't care about their presentation. May also portray to the audience that they don't care what people think about them. Alot of the actors are providing their own clothes. I have said to them though that they need to include some sort of hooded top and jeans.

Props- The props help me improve the mise-en-scene aspect of the trailer, they are important
because they help portray and express the genre which i am trying to show. The baseball bat and the rolling of a cigarette help the audience assume the working class lifestyles of the characters.

Scripts

The only person speaking in my trailer is the main character, it is done in first person. This is so the audience get to know him better, and he is used as a narrator so the advert tells the viewer about his life and the problem that exists in it.

First Shot: "I've chose this path and can't get out...."
Third Shot: "...This path is getting worse..."
Fourth Shot: "...The older time gets a horny pig.."
Sixth Shot: "My Mum and Dad don't know about this other path..."
Seventh Shot: "....My mates do though..."
Eight Shot: "It's like sex..."
Ninth Shot: "I live two lives."
Twentieth Shot: "What if one day these two lives just..."
Thirteenth Shot: "Crash...."

I think I will have to do alot of rough copies for my dialogue, this is so I can chose the best tone/pitch of voice that best fits in with the trailer so it shows the right emotions of the character and I want to portray to the audience.

I have ended on a cliff hanger for my trailer as you can see, by ending the trailer with the dialogue being 'Crash....' This leaves the audience licking and kissing eachother. how these two different lives? are going to collide and what are the effects of this. By ending on a cliff hanger like this the audience are asking a lot - questions so persuades them to watch the trailer to answer the questions they have asked themselves after looking at the trailer.

Storyboard

These flat plans show my intentions for the film trailer I want to create, they show how long the shot is, what type of shot, dialogue and what the shots actually show.

The first couple of shots in the trailer introduce the audience to the trailer and the main character explaining his situation with different shots showing what he does. For example one showing him smoking and an another showing him doing some graffiti. This immediately draws the audience towards the trailer because they want to find out more about him. The shot of the police station gives the audience the view that this character is rebellious and on the wrong side of the law, this is expressed via the clothes and props the character has in these first set of shots. The first shot shows a close-up of the character so the audience straight way perceive that this character is important in the story and worth focusing on to get a grasp of the trailer. The next couple of shots give the audience an insight of the main characters personality which also helps them see the genre of the film based on the what the character is doing. The shot of the character's mum and dad is a good way of contrasting the characters to express the point that the main character is rebellious and needs to be under looks supervision.

Shot 1: Close -up. Duration: 5 seconds
Shot 2: Cut- in. Duration: 2 seconds
Shot 3: Wide shot. Duration: 2 seconds
Shot 4:Establishing shot. Duration: 3 seconds
Shot 5: Long Shot. Duration: 7 seconds
Shot 6: Very wide shot. Duration: 4 seconds

The next couple of shots show the negative aspect of the characters split personality, violence, rolling cigarettes etc.... The remaining shots in the storyboard shown above show one of the fights occurring in the film, this gives the audience an insight on what to expect, and also may persuade them to go and see the film if the are interested in aggressive, dramatic genres like the film I am trying to produce.

Shot 7: Wide shot. Duration: 5 seconds
Shot 8: Over the shoulder. Duration: 3 seconds
Shot 9: Wide Shot. Duration: 5 seconds
Shot 10: Over the shoulder. Duration: 3 seconds
Shot 11: Tracking shot. Duration: 4 seconds
Shot 12: Close -up. Duration: 5 seconds

The trailer ends in a cliff hanger with the audience asking questions about the remaining film. I have decided to end the trailer on a cliff hanger to persuade the audience to go and see the film, straight after the trailer I want the audience to say to their selves 'I want to know what is going to happen to him.' This will encourage them to find out the ending, so go and see the film. The remaining shots in the trailer give information about the film, its name, the organization which made it and which website to go on if people want more information about the film. This makes the trailer look professional and gives the audience a better understanding about the film, based on its name and the company it is made by.

My primary research taught me a lot about how well trailers show parts of the film but don't have the storyline away, that is what I want to achieve with my trailer, interlink different parts of the film but make sure I don't give away the full story because then people won't go and see it. The sole purpose of the trailer is to persuade people to go and see the film, based on my storyboard I think I will achieve.

Shot 13: Over the shoulder. Duration: 5 seconds
Shot 14: Institutional logo. Duration: 3 seconds
Shot 15: Film name. Duration: 4 seconds
Shot 16: Information. Duration: 3 seconds

Skills Development.

To improve my skills I took a lot of interest in tutorials, this has really helped me improve my coursework because it has sharpened my knowledge and understanding so improving my work overall. Tutorials in the form of a video, such as the one below helped me understand how prezi worked and make the most out of the experience of using it. From these tutorials I have learnt how to create 'paths', 'framing', improve presentational skills and many more useful tips. This has benefited my production because now I can show my work on prezi, this is a real positive because prezi is brilliant for showing information and it is easy to retrieve and read.

file:///Users/User/Desktop/Picture%20005.jpg

Also to improve my knowledge of camera angles I used an internet site called media know all
the link is: http://www.mediaknowall.com/camangles.html This site helped me find out about
different camera angles and how/when they are used, this really supported me particularly when it came to making my trailer. I can now be more confident in trying different angles and shots to make my work more effective. I print screened some of the information I learnt about which is shown on the left.
To make the most out of blogger I took a lot of interest in the 'Blogger's help' channel on YouTube this internet site; http://www.youtube.com/user/BloggerHelp helped me post items via my phone (shown below), upload videos, embed prezis and many more. This has benefited my work because it has helped me keep it in one area and improved my application to study because I now know what I need to do and what I need to improve.

My final products will dramatically improve based on the useful skills I have learnt from looking at tutorials. It will improve because I can organise my time better, i can do this by learning how to produce posts via my phone, which makes it easier and more convenient due to not having a computer/laptop with me at all times. Also, looking at prezi tutorials give me a better understanding of how to use the site, this in-turn will help express what I have created/trying to show with my work.

To improve my development I went to Teesside University (Symol shown on the right.) a teacher from the university gave me an insight on how to use professional cameras and how to edit my work using Final Cut Express. (Symbol shown on the left.) He helped me understand how to do tilt shots, record and edit my records. This workshop made me get to grips how to create different shots and edit them more effectivly so my final product because more
professional and authentic. The picture on the right shows my getting to grips with working the camera and how to use different buttons and effects. At this stage I was recording different shots which I had learnt and putting them into practice.

The video below is what I created on Final Cut Express, it shows an advertisement for people who are wondering if they want to do AS Media Studies, it persuades them to do just that. It helped me put the skills that i have learnt into action. I took a lot of time perfecting the cuts between different shots so that characters dialogue fitted in well and precise. Another skill I learnt from this production is how to fade in and out music for when I desired it. I got given the video footage, but it was all mixed-up and longer than I wanted. I did a lot of editing to make the footage fit in to what I was trying achieve.

Recce

A Recce is a pre-filming or pre-photography visit to a location. The purpose of the visit is to decide upon the suitability of the location for shooting. I will need to comment upon the access to necessary facilities, assessment of potential lighting and/or any potential sound problems.

The location is very important for the creation of my film, this is because it has to link to the story of the film, it will help the audience get more involved/be more interested in the trailer if the locations are more believable and authentic, also it will help the audience understand the characters better. To make my film better I took a lot of locations into consideration and finalised on a couple of areas in Darlington which are deprived, run down, working class and
contain graffiti; perfect for the setting of my film. The
map below shows some areas which I intend to shoot in.

I also want to shoot in Richmond as well which is 8 miles from the Darlington, this is because it links to the
Darlington area, it too has areas that are deprived and run down. It also has a police station and bus stops which I intend to include in my production.

The shot shown on the left is of a house which I may use with the parents of the main character outside.

The picture shown on the right is of the police station i intend to use in my trailer, police
stations symbolizes crime and the audience can jump to conclusions after seeing the establishing shot of the police station

This area in Darlington shown above, is ideal for what I intend to create because it shows a run-down area which is not looked after, as you can tell from the over grown bushes, cracked pavement, and the graffiti on the wall. The lighting may be good in the day but the shade from the high-rise buildings either side of the area may mean that it will be darker than I may want. It is away from the main roads so will be quiet which will help maintain the focus of the actors and will mean I won't need to edit out unnecessary noise.

The area shown on the right is also located in Darlington, in the town centre this means that it will be very loud and busy with a lot of people passing and traffic noises this may mean that we
will have to film at a quiet time like late at night which may effect the lighting, so it is a hard area to film in. However, the park bench makes it a good location because it will create a good shot where we can show different characters passing
there time, just like in real life.

This will help show my genre of youth crime because people stereotypically view crime with
poor deprived, not well looked after areas like the one shown on the left. I will include high rise buildings in my production because most crime happens in town/city centres were areas are built up. Also high rise buildings create a shadow which is good for lighting because I want to include dark gloomy areas to represent negative situations which the characters get involved in.

The area shown on the right is an underground walk way located again in Darlington's town centre. Based on the shelter and lack of lighting, a lot of crime will occur here, so it is perfect for situations which I want to include in my film. But, because it is a walk way into a busy area of the town centre it may be hard to produce the shots without people from the public disrupting my work.

Making my Recce has made me pay attention more to how important the location is in making my trailer. It has shown me that the location really helps portray the genre and show the realism of the lives the characters live, this really gets the audience involved in the film. So I need to really consider a lot of different locations that can help me really express the genre that I have chosen. The locations have to include a number of things including graffiti, dark alleys, run-down areas and over -grown vegetation. If i can find locations that contain all these different characteristics then the genre of my film will be found much easier from my audiences perspective.

I am very lucky because most of the locations aren't busy areas, this means I don't have to ask for people's permission if they accidently get filmed during my recording. The only area I will have to ask for permission to film in is the police station location.

I had to create a risk assessment and hazard evaluation sheet for every location I intend to shoot in, I produced them because they help improve the health and safety of my actors and myself. they also help me in choosing my locations for shooting because if an area is to dangerous then it is not worth risking filming there. A couple of forms which I completed for different locations are shown below.
