Photo Shoot Plans

In my photo shoot I have decided not to use natural light and use a standard set-up in a studio. This involves the key light, this is the main light located near the camera. I also intend to use the fill light which is placed the other side of the key light from the camera but lower down, this helps fill any shadows which may be seen. This will effect my magazine front cover and poster because this shot will help me get rid of any unprofessional shadows and produce the perfect lighting for what I intend to create.

If I don't use my first photo shoot plan as shown, I will most probably use one like the one shown above. It is very simple to set up but very effective, it makes the photo like very natural, but by using photo shop, it can make the picture look very striking. The natural lighting and plain background can be altered in effects on photo shop to what I desire.

The best photo shoot plan to show my genre will be dark, low-key lighting. The audience will interpret this as a crime genre because they now can see the location as dark and negative. Showing that the characters only come out when the sun goes down and do illegally things which they may not be able to do in the sunlight because they may get caught. A set-up like the one shown below will help show the darkness and the street lamps, if positioned correctly then, it will show not a lot of light in the shot, but enough to see the character, and see their facial expression and body language to help show the mise-en-scene of the film.

Flatplans & Fonts For Film Name

Film Poster - I have named the film 'Deuce' which is derived from the French word meaning 'two'. This represents the two split personalities of the main character, the film name is located in the centre of the poster and will be a contrasting colour from the colour behind it so it's more eye catching. I think I will chose a graffiti-like font so it provides an indication of the genre, but more importantly the font has to look aesthetically pleasing. The main character is shown with a baseball bat over his shoulders with his hood up with a very serious face. I will try to re-create a black eye with make-up so the crime genre is shown to the audience more effectively and efficiently. I have chosen a medium shot for the character so the facial expressions are shown more clearly. I will try to introduce the producers and actors involved below the name of the film but not in big letters because it is not the most important information which I am trying to show. In my final product I will also try to include a slogan of some sort to help show the audience what the film is about, and persuade them to go and see the film. The poster doesn't have a high a lot of depth of field because it helps show the characters situation, stuck in his world and can't get out, just like a jail, this shows that the character doesn't have any freedom to do what he wants to do. The location well not be a huge problem because the shot will show most of the character, rather than the location, but the location need to be thought about because it will effect the lighting, I am going to use dark lighting to show the dark personality of the character so preferably and plain background which is done with natural, dark light.

Film magazine cover - I haven't thought of a name for my magazine yet, so I have just included 'masthead' where I feel the masthead will be positioned, I have positioned it across the page and across the top, the name of the magazine is very important, that is why it is in the largest font and at the top of the page and that is why I am taking my time to decide on a final name. I will try to include lots of sell lines in my magazine front
cover because it sells the product better, it is a great way of advertising what the magazine has to offer. To make the magazine more authentic and professional I have included the date of release for the magazine, the price and the bar
code. The audience will believe/trust the information from the magazine better if they feel it is professional. Important information is highlighted by being underlined, or placed within a star, this makes it stand out more and more eye-catching to the audience. The picture on the front cover helps advertise the most important article of the magazine, I will try to create a very dramatic, eye -catching picture which helps show the genre of the film through the use of mise-en-scene; showing what the character is wearing and including props such as the baseball bat shown in the version I have created. I will also try to invite the audience into the film by showing the audience the personality of the main character, I will try to show this via facial expressions and body
language. Again, for this photo I will use either a plain white background or a dark natural setting, as shown in my photo shoot plans. A natural dark setting will show the dark, negative personality of the main character in the photo. A plain, white background helps the audience concentrate on the main photo, rather than the lest important information around it. I have decide to create a wide shot because it shows the hole body of the character this is good in expressing mise-en-scene in the form of costume, people can see the genre much better based on the costume and the prop.

After I have produced my flat plans I thought about how this will effect my final product, after creating my first draft for my poster, I think I will have to bring into consideration the use of colours and the how important the main picture is in the poster. From asking people about posters in my audience research, I have come to the conclusion that the most important part of the poster is how eye-catching it is and how well the picture portrays the film. I will try to improve how attractive, eye-catching and pleasing the poster is by including bright colours and makes sure the positioning of the picture and words are thought of and look well placed within
the poster. This will help satisfy the audience's perception of the film.

My magazine cover flat plan made me think a lot about how important it is to attract the audience. The use of sell lines which are highlighted, underlined and put in a big font make information appear more important and attract the audience more to the product, this will effect my final product because; I will try to include the use of highlighting, underlining and/or font size to interpret the importance of information which is shown.

After doing my flatplans, I then brought into consideration different fonts which I can use to show the name 'DEUCE' and thought about if they would look good if I placed them in my flatplans, here are some different font which I have found to help show the genre of youth crime to the audience.

To look at different fonts for my film name i used www.dafont.com, it is a great website which
shows different possible fonts for whatever I want to produce. I am going to investigate different fonts on this website and how well they help show what the film is about.
I want to achieve a bold, strong font which portrays the 'hard man' look of the main character. I looked under the section of 'destroy fonts' and it came up with some very useful results, such ones are shown below.

First Font - Destroyed License Plate

I think this is a good start as a template because it portrays the rough, untidy life the characters involved in film live in. The sparks around the name make it stand out and will attract the audience to the name. The only problem with this font is that it looks unfinished and scruffy which may make the audience perceive a poor film.

Second font - Destruccion

Very similar to the first one, but the word look more worn-away and run down, interpreting the location of the film. The sparks around the word is harder to identify than the first one. This is a positive because it makes the word look tidier and more professional.

Third Font - Defused

This is the final font that I thought would look good for my production under the category of 'destroy fonts.' It still links to the rough, jagged and ruffled look which I am trying to achieve.

Fourth Font - Graffiti

I also tryed to create a font linked to graffiti, the one shown above is a graffiti font which links to the crime and negative aspect of the film, many of my audience will be of an age were they have seen or have tried graffti art so relates to their lifes, which may attract them to the film more affectivly.

Fifth Font - Amstersdam
This is another font I experimented with, its came under the category of 'Graffiti.' Its not as strong as the other graffiti- themed font due to the smooth sides, which makes it not look as strong as striking to the audience. To make the font look more aggressive i tried to put the word in capitals but the font didn't allow me.

To help me decide on which font to use I asked 30 people from my target audience to choose their favourite, based on the results I will use the most popular font for my production.

The two most popular fonts are 'Destroyed license Plate' and 'Destruccion' both with 11 votes a piece, I am happy that two fonts are really popular because I can now choose myself which one is better, for both my magazine cover and film poster I can now evaluate how good both fonts look and fit in with my production. So now I will use either one of the two fonts for my work or use both fonts, but for different parts of the production process.

Rough copies of institutional logos

My main focus for institutional logo's are keeping it simple, easy to recognise and memorable

The rough copies I created gave me an idea of useful names which are unique and professional.
used a black and white background for all of my work so the name of the brand stands out
better. I will probably decide on the best one by asking my audience on which they prefer, then use that for my final work. I have only used pen and paper so when I come to a conclusion on the best rough copy the final copy will be much better because it will be produced on photo shop. I got inspired to create these like I did basically because they are different and unique from anything else, they have been thought of randomly from myself. I believe all three are very good though and would be accepted as professional names and logos for a company. The institutional logos are very important in a trailer because if a well-known company produces a film with their name on it the audience will see the product as being of high quality and satisfying the viewers' needs. The logos are shown for around 3 seconds in a trailer this is enough time though for the audience to identify the creators of the film, the logos are shown at
different times in different trailers, some are shown in the middle, some at the beginning and some at the ending. I believe the best time to show the logo is at the end of the trailer because after the audience have seen what the film has to offer their attention will be at their highest level so they will remember the name better. So here are some different names and ideas which I have come up with...
I think the 'W' in the background is a good symbol because it is simple and easy to remember, I think I should have done 'pictures' in a small font because it is not as important as what the rest of the logo has to offer. The circle around the word 'wisdom' highlights the name of the company and is a good way I believe to show off the company better. One thing that I don't like about all my rough copies are that the colours I have included are very dull and not attractive. When I produce my final copy I will try to use a range of bright colours to improve how eye-catching it is.I like how this one shows the city landscape it works really well with the name of the institution. I like how the name covers the background but you can still identify what the background shows. If this becomes my final copy I will have to find or create a similar skyline to New York, which will be difficult but if done successfully then would look effective.

In this case I was trying to write the name of the company in the form of a calligram, that is the word is written in the shape of what it actually means. I think the name of this company could be better, it is not very strong and doesn't sound as firm as the two other names. The green colour as well could be better. But I think this idea will be easy to remember for the audience due to its simplicity and originality.

I produced a pie chart which is shown below based on the audience views on which the thought was the best institutional name/logo I did this research because it has helped me decide on the best copy which I had produced, I asked the audience for their feedback because their opinion matters more than anyone else's because their the ones who are watching the film. So when I produce my trailer I will create the logo of 'Wisdom Pictures' this rough copy took over half of the audience's votes.

Another idea I thought of was calling the company 'Number One Studios' I think this is a better name than the other ones I have thought of because; the audience imply that the studios are the best due to the 'number one' in the name. Also, the name is very easy to remember. So when I produce my logo I will consider calling it 'Number One Studios.' I thought of this idea whilst looking at pictures on google images and the image saying 'We're number one' just stood out, which made me consider including it in my coursework.

Wisdom Pictures institutional logo rough copies

Rough copy one - Shown below are a couple of institutional logos under the name of 'Wisdom
pictures' I did my logos for my trailer on photoshop. The one shown on the left contains a lot of altered colours and changing in contrast/balance. I thinking it looks very
dramatic and effective due to the black and white mixture. My only negative comment is that the word 'wisdom' is not as eye catching as i want, its to embedded into the background, it could be clearer.

Rough Copy two - I think the logo shown on the left is good, but not as good as the one described above. It contains a lot of vibrance and curves this has produced a very bland colour which is not very pleasing from the audiences point of view. To make it better I think I could have used more eye-catching colours which will not only look better but also satisfy the audience more convincingly.

Number One Studios institutional logo rough copies

Rough copy three - Shown on the left is my first attempt at doing an institutional logo under the name of Number One Studio and I am really happy about the outcome. The foam finger isreally effective to express the name. I used the colour of the finger for 'number' and 'studios' so its all the same colour, making it look more professional. The word 'Number' is bigger and high in the logo compared to 'Studios' because it is more important information.

Rough copy four - Shown on the right is my second attempt at creating a logo under the name
of 'Number One Studios.' The colours which I used include 'Gold' and 'Bronze' these to colours imply quality and professionalism, so I think the colours involved in the logo work very well. I believe that this one isn't has good as the one shown above though.

Audience feedback on institutional logos -I asked 30 people of my target audience to choose their favourite out of the institutional logos I have created, i produced the recordings in a bar chart which is shown below. I chose to produce the information in a bar chart because it is easy to see which logos are popular and which ones aren't.

The most popular of the logos is the third rough copy, this is one of the 'number one studios' logos. It got 13 out of 30 votes, based on this research I am going to use the third rough copy for my production. I also may intend using the most popular 'wisdom pictures' logo for my production, I will evaluate whether it is worth including or not.

Sourcing the Copyright for my Soundtrack

Based on my primary research, the favourite genre of music was hip/hop, so I thought carefully about a song from this genre which best compliments my plans for the trailer. I came to the conclusion that the best song to use is 'Tinnie Tempah's' song 'Pass Out.' This song is very up- beat and fasted paced, it represents the hectic lifestyles of the characters. I think the song will be used throughout the trailer but at different volume levels, the volume will be lower when more important scenes/situations are shown. To get the copy right for this track I firstly had to find the record label which he is signed to. I located his record label on MySpace, it is 'DL Records'. Their logo is shown on the right. I then found an email address which I used to contact them to see if I could use their song in my coursework, I then emailed the company to see if I could use their product. If I receive no reply from the email then I can use the song. The email that I sent is located below....

Dear DL Records

I am an A level student and I am writing to request your permission to use one track from the album by 'Pass Out – EP’ made by the artist ‘Tinie Tempah.’

The track I wish to use is "Pass Out" on the album. With your permission this track would be used in my current A-Level Media Project, acting as a soundtrack, this involves creating a Film Trailer, as well as producing a poster for the film and a film magazine cover.

If I received your permission this track would be viewed by my peers, teachers and the OCR exam board, it would also be uploaded to a public video website in order for it to be embedded into my personal blog for research and planning.

The Artist and your Company would be fully recognised throughout pre-production and the final trailer itself. A copyright notice, with wording supplied by you can be included in the records of the project. If this is required, please send full details.

Yours Sincerely,

William Gardner

If the record label do not allow me to use their song then I would have to think of a back-up, I don't have one at the moment but if I need one then it would be of similar genre to 'Pass Out' so I can keep the representation the same as if I would be using my intended song. If worst comes to worst I will try to create a useful beat on Garage Band.

Issues surrounding soundtrack

I have just been informed (23rd September) that i am not allowed to use my proposed soundtrack ('Pass Out') for my production, this is due to the exam board not allowing me to use someone else's work. To overcome this problem, i will need to create my own soundtrack, i will do this on Garage Band and try to replicate the song which I intended to use.

Proposal of ideas

Based on my audience research, the genre I have chosen for my film is youth crime, my audience liked this genre so they would probably be interested in what I am producing. The story is about a teenager who is faced with hard decisions about his life, there are two sides to his personality, the side which is mum and dad see which is a good lad, who the parents should be proud of, but the other side is what his friends see, an aggressive and abusive teenager. He tries to cover these separate personalities to the different people in his life. But one day it all comes out and his almost secret identities are revealed and everything goes wrong for him. I won't include the rest of the story line in the trailer so the audience keeps wondering how these two different lives are going to collide and what are the effects of this. By ending on a cliff hanger like this the audience are asking a lot questions so persuades them to watch the trailer to answer the questions they have asked themselves after looking at the trailer. But for my film I will collide these twos lives by showing the main character being hand-cuffed and put into a police car with his mum and dad looking on, this leads to his mum and dad losing trust in their son and in turn their son gets out of control, his mum and dad try to turn him back into the boy they once knew and loved. The film is a lot about maturing and learning from mistakes, as the main character gets older the wiser, maturer and better behave he becomes, a lot of thanks going to his mum and dad for getting him out of the negative world he was once in. For the finale of the film we see the main character grow up to having a job, with him wearing a suit and looking a new man with a positive future.

I think this storyline is good because a lot of teenagers can relate to it. I believe that a lot of teenagers will have different personalities from when they see their friends in contrast to when they see their family. This is what I am trying to show with this film, I am also trying to illustrate the consequences of this spilt personality when the cover-up breaks down. I will try to show this split through mainly mise-en-scene, I will portray this main character with different costumes, locations and props between the times that he sees his family and when he meets up with his friends. To create a trailer for my film I will show direct shots, one after another, of him with the different groups of people in his life, this will show the audience straight away the contrast in personality, body language and characteristics of the main character in the film. I will do a voice over in the trailer in first person for the main character to show his perspective of the situation he is in so the audience can understand the storyline better. I will also try to show in my trailer both sides of the characters life but not when they collide with each other, this leaves the audience wanting questions to be answered and the only way they can be answered is if they go and see the film. The genre will be shown in the trailer via the use of mise-en-scene, the introduction of hooded-youths and baseball bats will give the audience ideas about what the genre is about because they presume and link the costume and props to the genre. To make the genre stronger and easier for the audience to identify, location needs to be thought about, the viewers won't believe it is a crime film if the characters live in mansions, deprived run-down areas will have to be used this will help the audience recognise the genre better. Therefore, I will have to include a lot of establishing shots in my trailer to help show the location.
The location will be picked wisely as well for the poster and the magazine cover because it has to look aesthetically pleasing and also professional. To make it look professional I will try to replicate the codes which I discovered in my research such as mastheads, sell line placement, colours, different shot types and many more characteristics of a magazine covers. For the poster I will try to show the genre of the film and help the audience decide if they want to see the film or not, I will try to accomplish this by showing a dramatic shot which is eye catching and help get possible viewers interested in seeing the film.
My film poster will try to contain the main character, I think I will use a close-up because it will help show the expressions of the character better. However, the disadvantage of this shot is that I can't show the costume of the character this is a problem because the audience need to see the genre of the film though mise-en-scene, and the costume is an important part of this. I will include a prop such as a baseball bat for the poster because it will represent the violence involved in the film. The name of the film will be in a big bold font so it stands out from the page so the audience can see it better. To make the poster more professional I will include the name of the producers and the actors involved in the film.
My magazine cover will have a masthead and sell lines, the masthead name will be catchy and easy to remember whilst the sell lines will be a good way of advertising the contents. More important information will be highlighted effectively via the use of underlining or put in a brighter, contrasting colour. The main picture will link to the main article in the magazine, the picture will have to be dramatic and different so the audience are interested in the article more positively. To make the cover look more professional I will include the price, date and bar-code, not only will this make it look better but also the audience will believe the information in the magazine is more reliable.
In my trailer I will try to attract people to the film but not give too much of the storyline away because I don't want people to know the outcome of the film before they have watched it. This is because they may not want to watch it any more based on the revealing advert. In my trailer I will try to introduce the main characters in the film so the audience feels part of it. The genre of the film will be shown mainly through mise-en-scene; the location, props and costume people will look at these three areas and identify the representation of youthful crime. This will also help the viewers make up their mind if the want to go and see the film or not because they will recognise the genre and maybe interested in that type of genre.

Institutional Context

1. Firstly someone will have an inspiration, this may come from a magazine, book or play etc.... A producer will decide if this inspiration is good, a director will visualise the idea and whether or not they can make it a reality. The writer expands the idea by producing main characters and a better plot. A 'treatment' will then be produced this shows the plot and the characters of the film. This is the part where me as the producer gets inspired and thinks of new innovative ideas for my trailer, magazine cover and film poster

2. The producer does a pitch to persuade people to give money to develop the script. The producer goes to film production companies for money as well. The producer may recieve money from broadcasters in return for future sales, if this doesn’t work then they may try for a grant from the UK film council. Private investors may be interested in investing. This area doesn't apply to me, but if I needed money for my idea to make it better I would have to ask different people and companies to give me a loan or something like a grant so money could be put into my product to make it better. Another area which I may struggle with is the financing part, I will have to pay for the costumes, the special effects, I will not be able to find an investor in the way that a lot of films do. I will overcome this by not spending a lot of money on what I need, I will try to keep the cost down to as little as possible but also make sure the quality of the production is not ruined.

3. The writer firstly produces a synopsis, the writer and the producer will agree on key bits of the film, most writers will then create a step outline to plan their script, one of the hardest bits for the writer is the first draft. Once the producer and writer are happy the draft is sent to the financers. When everyone is happy with the draft it is locked off and becomes a final draft, the writer will then get paid. The final stage of script development is the creation of sales development. In the production stage of my product I will ask my audience for feedback of my products so I can make different alterations along the way until the final outcome.

4. The producer and director now package the script into a potential full commerical, ready for financing. One way to make the product more commercial is to introduce well-known stars/actors. Alot of thought goes into the financial process, for the film to be a proper proposition the producer must know how much the production is going to cost. Investors would want to know how the money is going to be raised and the plans for paying this money back, as well as the likely return on their investment. The product is now becoming commerical; people may give their opinions on the product. I will decide on my actors via call sheets, the film is going to be made more commercial though the use of advertising, a trailer, article in a film magazine and poster for the film. If I produce all three then the public awareness and understanding of the film will vastly improve; this will most probably increase the amount of viewers.

5. Travelling will make people aware of the film and will get different types of financers. The producer’s lawyer comes up with contracts to sell deals. The producer may make money from pre-sales as well, this is selling rights for the film before it is produced. People may think of getting loans from special areas in banks who will offer money. Insurance will give money me money for the production. I don't need a lot of money for my production so I don't require anyone giving me money. But if I did receive money I would make the products more professional by getting professional actors, better costumes and spending more money on advertising.

6. Pre-production now starts, directors and producers begin casting for actors. Storyboards are made showing the different shot types that will be used for each shot. The production designer plans different aspects of the film. Effects are now started which may take a long time, logistics is now considered for the product. My storyboard is later in my research and planning which you can have a look at, this shows the different shot types and duration of the shots.

7. Shooting begins and the funding is released, the camera department is responsible for getting the right footage. Lighting, sound, make-up and hair are considered before the shot begins. Whilst this is happening the actors must stay to their characters personality. Special effects are carefully done with health and safety considered. When it is being produced it has to stick to a strict timetable so it is in time for finishing. My strict timetable is the deadline for my finished work whilst I have to consider the lighting, sounds and make-up so the product looks authentic and is aesthetically pleasing. I think I would find this area very hard to do because I am not using professional actors. I will have to pick wisely the people I use for my production, people who are willing to play the character positions well.

8. The editor now creates a narrative and a sequence for the film. When the picture is done sound is used to fit in to the film. Now digital effects are added with titles and credits, adjustment of the colour is done for the film, after this a sound mixer sets the final levels. After the final cut the film is finished! A lot of time and care must be taken into the narrative, colour and digital effects because these areas make the film look good and improve the experience for the audience if done well.

9. A special sales agent and film salesman/woman is introduced, they create a trailer to help market and sell the film. There is so much opposition, sales agent will need to go to great lengths to attract people to the audience. To increase the profile a high profile screening may be done so people are aware of the film. Now the product is well – known distributors will set good deals to distribute the film. This is what I am doing, my main objective is to attract people to my product so they want to see it. My products will be amazing but if they don't make people want to go and see the film then they are useless.

10. The marketing team sets test screenings to see what people think of it. The potential audience is targeted with advertising on a poster, film trailers and in magazines. The use of high quality adverts on television, radio, newspaper and magazines could mean positive word of mouth marketing. Niche marketing is now more possible via the internet. Negotiation must be done for cinemas to screen the film. This is primary research just like what I have done, it is very good because it helps you get to know your audience better. This stage is the most important stage out of all of them. This is mainly due to this stage is the stage I am mostly trying to replicate. Advertising is made so much easier if a institution or director is well known. This is because people will believe that if they have made good films before, then they will make another good film. Multi-national companies who can afford to spend big money on the production of a film will most probably make a film which is better than an independent company who only have a budget of £1,000 of their production. Because I am only a small budget, I need to try and replicate independent labels how they make the most with what they have in terms of assets and facilities to make an effective film that still helps to show and express the storyline. For example if Steven Spielberg produced a film on any genre than it will have high amounts of views due to his previos well-known, successfull films. Its all about 'brand name' an institution like '21st Century Fox' need no introduction because of their previous quality, entertaining films such as Narnia, Avatar and The Simpsons. Magazine publishers are a totally separate company from the institutions who make the films, but they still feature films from well-known institutions and have well-known actors/directors on their front covers. This links to the fact that people pay money to help get an in-sight on the highly anticipated films, these films are highly anticipated due to a 'big name' directors such a Quentin Tarantino. Or a 'big name' institution such as Paramount. So magazine covers normally have well-known institution's films on their covers because they are the biggest films out at the moment, which people want to see, so are persuaded to by the magazine so they get information about it.

11. A high – profile, star – studded premier may be used to launch the film, so the public can dramatically see this media coverage. Cinema will now screen the film when it is out for public viewing. Distributors will supply exhibitors with prints of the film. Exhibitors calculate their share of the box office and distributors calculate their marketing costs; when this has been recorded financers recover their investments.

12. Additional revenue may be gained by hotels or flights wanting to show the film and possibly make additional money when it comes out for home viewing, such as on DVD. Computer games or other product licences maybe usefull in producing extra revenue, if the film is a success and makes a profit then people involved reap the rewards. This can be compounded if the film was re-released in the future.

Primary Research

Firstly, for my primary research I produced a questionnaire which is shown above, I gave thirty to people who I believed would be interested in the work I am going to produce. The individual who was doing the questionnaire had to tick a box which links to the question and their personal respected opinion. The questions included:
  • Gender?

  • Age?

  • UK Tribe?

  • Favourite Drink?

  • Favourite clothes brand?

  • Favourite Music genre?

  • Favourite Film genre?

  • How long should a trailer be?
  • Do you like ‘Cliff hangers’?

  • What shot type should be used for a film poster?
  • How many pictures should be used for the front cover of a magazine?
I thought hard about the questions to ask my audience because they need to realte to what I am trying to create and help me with my technique during production. I produced these questions because they helped me get to know the audience better, they helped me identify the type of film they liked seeing and what it contains, the questions helped me identify what the audience wanted to see when I produce my products. For example the audience would rather see a cliff hanger than not see one, also the audience would rather see 2 pictures on the front cover in contrast to one or three. As you can see, I produced my questions with a lot of care because I wanted to get the most out of my audience, as you can see I have come up with a lot of conclusions from my research which I can put into my production to make it better and more pleasing from an audience's point of view.

I know that asking only 30 people didn't represent the whole of the audience's view but it gave me a rough outline of getting to know the audience better so my products can satisfy them better. So the information that I gathered was easier to understand I produced pie charts and a bar graph for areas of my research...

The information I recorded helped me see what I could do to make my products better for the audience. Also, businesses may be interested in advertising in my products because the questionnaire identified the target audience for possible businesses willing to advertise in it, for example the audience preferred coke to any other drink and their favourite brand was Fred Perry. The information I received will also help me produce my products now because I have a better idea of what the audience want, for example I found out that the audience prefer trailers that end in 'cliff hangers', that trailers should last around 61 - 90 seconds and a magazine front cover should contain around 3 pictures.

In my primary research I invited a number of possible viewers of the genre youth/crime and asked them to give me their feedback on posters of the youth/crime genre which I showed them. I asked them to comment on different magazine covers which I showed them as well. The focus

group is shown on the right. So I could get the most out of this focus group I asked them questions about the technical construction of them, the aesthetic appeal, the content, what would they like to see done differently and why and the characters involved. Asking all these different questions helped me identify what people want to see in a product and how I can copy the positive bits of these products and endorse them into mine. For my focus group I firstly showed them two front covers which I asked them to compare and give both postive and negative feedback on, the front covers were....

Drew Armstrong said "I like both pictures for the front covers, they both look like they have been a snap -shot from the film because of the mise-en-scene, this also helps to see the genre of the film which is being described."

Francis Finn said "I think the 'total film' cover needs more sell lines, it doesn't inform me what the magazine is about and has very little bright colours, this makes it look dull."

Jess Holmes said "I like the way 'Empire' uses it colours to relate to the main article of 'the joker'. I like the font chosen in 'total film for Max Payne' it makes it look rough and like the film is based on destruction."

Joss Havakin said "Both magazines look professional because of their constuctions, both have clear mastheads, include bar codes and well-known actors in the picture."

Euan Kearney said "Both magazines use the words 'world exclusive' and 'plus' it sounds unique and better than the competition. Both magazines still have dead space in them which is a real negative."

Sam Coomber said "The picture for 'total film' is brilliant it really helps see the genre of the film and catches the audience's attention

Next I asked them to give me feedback on the posters below;

Harriet Beeton said: "I like how the 'this is England' poster shows all the awards its won across the top of the poster, it makes it look like its a good film and worth watching." she went on to say "I can easily identify the genre of 'Adulthood' because of the baseball bat its symbolises crime and aggression."

Sam Coomber said: "I don't like the shot in 'This is England' it is too far away, it is hard to identify the characters and the costumes in contrast to 'Adulthood' which has a much closer shot. I do like how the heading for 'This is England' is in white red and blue this shows that it is a British film because the colours relate to the United Kingdom flag."

Tomas Keavney said: "I love how both posters use costume/mise-en-scene to express the genre of the film when it was made, for example this is England characters have Dr Martins on and skinny jeans, this is typical 80s clothes, whilst Adulthood has the characters wearing hoodies and trakies showing youth, 'gangsta' crime."

My primary research is very different from my secondary mainly because the questions I asked gave different answers compared to what I recorded in my secondary research. Also my focus group was people of similar age to me, my secondary research may have been based upon people of a different age, class and perception on things so I am not surprised by the fact that my research was different. I believe my secondary research is more accurate because I relied on well-known companies who have put a lot more thought and time into their records so are probably more accurate and useful than mine. But I am happy with the research I have come up with because it will effect my product in a positive way, I now have identified my target audience clearly and this gives me more food for thought. I can attract them because I know what they are interested in and what they would like to see in my products.

Mood board- I produced a mood board on photoshop which is shown below, it helped me get to know my audience better and understand which will attract them to my products more effectivly. This will effect my final products because I now know what my audience want to see in terms of costume. The mood board was created based upon what my adueince research produced, I included pictures based upon their hobbies and what they enjoy.

Secondary Research

Here is the research that I found on 'This is England'

The Youth Crime genre led me to the 'This is England' internet site. http://www.thisisenglandmovie.co.uk/ I retrieved information about the potential audience and the actors, the information is shown above. I found it hard to pick out an audience that is like a modern day 'skinhead' which was described in this information. Therefore I had to look at http://www.uktribes.com// This internet site helped me find a group of people who were similar to this 80s 'skinhead' culture, so I could bring the audience into the twenty -first century. Firstly, I thought of the indie scenesters, both groups share the view of feeling unique and not mainstream, they love to be different. More information about the indie scenesters is shown below. Based on this source, people who were part of this skin head culture in the 80s would love to see this film because of the costume and the location. Both probably relate to the lifestyles which they had when they were younger. The film will be a good flashback to bring back memories for them. I looked at channel 4 news and it claimed 'The film's production team say the movie highlights important issues such as the dangers of bullying and racism, and deserves to be seen by a younger audience. ' The problem with this though is that it is certificate 18, so the young audience are restricted from seeing the film. Also, the target audience is reached 'perhaps at the working class, most likely teenagers, because the working class can relate to this film, because of the setting and story line, and because most of the cast are teens/young adults,it enables teenagers to relate to the film a lot. The production practices are, in my opinion basic, because the set is pre-fabricated in residential areas of Nottingham, which makes it realistic, which helps the audience relate.' This is a good way of describing the information, I recieved it from http://www.scribd.com/ ,

'This is England' attract their audience very well, after they have identified who they want to target, they attract their potential audience by including effective mise-en-scene, the clothes the charcetrs wear have been thought of considerably, every characters costume has been created to portray to the audience a realistic 80s, traditional English film. Also the costume helps attract the target audience of indie scensters because the type of clothes they wear are the same as the characters in the film, so straight away if this tribe is the trailer or a poster they are suddenly attracted by the clothers which they like and can relate to, this is what i want to achieve when i produce my poster and trailer, costume which the audience can relate to and can help them make their mind up if they want to see the film or not, because my audience main audience are scene kids; I am going to look extensively at what they wear to help me decide on what my characetrs are going to wear. From identifying the audience it helps with chosing the music with the trailer, this is due if people like the genre of music in the trailer they then believe that they will like the film itself.

Research that I found on 'Adulthood'

The movie shows everyday life and struggle of London’s teenagers. The movie is aimed at mostly males aged 15-20 and for both Caucasian and Afro-American groups of people, that like to watch movies that reflect every day issues. Working class people are more likely to watch this type of movie because it represents a “normal” life. The reason for that is I watched the movie and from what I observed the movie is aimed at these groups of people, because its more of a boyish movie that has some violence and a lot of strong language and some sex scenes. The best way to describe this group of people is urban as I found out on UK tribes; http://www.uktribes.com/urban it stated;
'Core Tribe members are most influenced by what they see around them in their urban environments, in clubs and on social networks. YouTube, Myspace and Facebook are the most effective conduit to these kids.enthusiasts who don’t produce but enjoy consuming music and film with their friends. Their hooded tops are intimidating but their conversation is friendly, open-minded and laid back. Blingers are preoccupied with US music and icons, and spend big on label fashion.'

I believe this is a good way to describe this group of people who have seen the film 'Adulthood.'

The social class of my audience are middle to working class who are aged between 16 and 25 this is because the people involved in my production are around that age and the film relates to the lifestyles they live and the challenges they have faced, this has effected my production because I can take peoples past experiences into consideration and see if it fits in the film well.
